Cannon Completes Wire-to-Wire Victory in Tarheel Tour's Warrior Invitational

CHINA GROVE, N.C. -  By Craig Distl - Matt Cannon of Huntersville led wire to wire and won the $5,000 first-place check in the Tarheel Tour's Warrior Invitational at Warrior Golf Club.

Cannon shot 69 Thursday to finish at 13-under-par 200 in the 54-hole event. He edged Ben Case of Charlotte by one shot for his second Tarheel Tour win of the season and sixth in the last two years. Cannon, who also won at Warrior in 2003, put himself in position to win with a course-record tying 63 in Tuesday's opening round and was steady throughout the final two rounds.

"I hit a lot of irons close to the pin the first day. I had three birdie putts inside a foot. That was as well as I can play," said Cannon. "But today, I just had to grind it out."
Case, who was paired with Cannon, hung close all day. The former Pfeiffer All-American made birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 and had a chance to tie Cannon but missed an 11-foot birdie putt on the final hole to finish at 201 and earn $3,000.
Charlotte's Matt Kilgo jumped into third place with a 69. Kilgo finished at 204 to pick up $2,000, while Drew Nelson of Woodstock, Ga., was fourth at 205, winning $1,500.
The next stop on the Tarheel Tour is the Regent Park Classic, July 13-15 at Regent Park Golf Club in Fort Mill, S.C.
