Jaspers and Aughtry Capture Another Lance Two-Man Title July 9, 2006
| MONROE, N.C. -- For the third time in its five-year history, the Lance Two-Man Team Championship has been won by Joe Jaspers and Jim
The duo fired an 11-under-par 61 Sunday in the best-ball event, and finished the two days at 124. That was good for a six-shot victory over the teams of Dick Stimart/Brian Tiddy and John Sadri/Alex Brenner. The tournament was played at Stonebridge Golf Club.
Aughtry had the hot hand in the first round, making five straight birdies at one point, but the final round belonged to his partner. Jaspers started rolling in birdies on the fifth hole and when all was said and done, Jaspers had eight birdies alone on his card.
"I just rode around and wrote down scores today," Aughtry said afterward. "Joe started making putts and it was all over."
Even the modest Jaspers had to give himself a pat on the back: "I made everything I looked at today," he said. "I made a mile of putts."
The victory keeps alive the twosome's streak of winning the Lance Two-Man every other year. Their previous titles came in 2002 and 2004.
"In odd years, we're not very good," joked Aughtry.
After contending in the gross division, the team of Brad Sarchett and Bobby Sturdivant wound up taking top honors in the net division. Sarchett and Sturdivant posted net rounds of 56 and 61 for a 117 total. That was good for a three-shot victory over a trio of teams.
The tournament drew a field of 55 teams.
