Cannon Bags Another Tarheel Tour Victory

MONROE, N.C. -- For the second time in three years, Huntersville's Matt Cannon is champion of the Tarheel Tour event that uses the Modified Stableford scoring system.
Cannon recorded eight points Friday at Stonebridge Golf Club to win the Stonebridge Open with a three-day total of 37 points. Cannon also won the 2002 tour event that utilized the Stableford system, which awards players five points for eagles, two points for birdies, no points for pars, minus one for bogeys, and minus three for double bogeys or worse.
"I enjoy this format because it frees you up on the putting surface," said Cannon, who collected $8,500 for the victory, his 17th on the Tarheel Tour. "You can be a little more aggressive because a birdie is worth two points, but a bogey is only minus one."
Although he played fairly well in the last two rounds -- shooting 69 each day -- Cannon said the key to victory was shooting 62 in the opening round, which netted him 22 of his 37 points.

"The first day I made every putt I looked at. I could do no wrong," Cannon said. "After that, I just hung on for the win. I didn't make any big mistakes and that's important in this format. Double bogeys kill you, and I didn't have any doubles."
Charleston's Rich Mudd, playing in the final threesome with Cannon, made a run at the leader by posting 13 points in the final round. But Mudd wound up in second after missing his last-chance effort, a 20-foot eagle putt on the final hole. Mudd finished with 34 points and collected the $4,300 second-place check.
Billy Judah of Chesapeake, Va., vaulted into third place with 14 points in the final round. His total of 33 points earned him $2,500, while Ryan Gioffre of Greensboro and Aaron Black of Aiken, S.C., tied for fourth at 31 and earned $1,750 each.
Frank Adams III of Laurinburg chipped in for eagle on the final hole to finish sixth with 29 points and take home $1,300.
The Tarheel Tour returns to action next week with the Olde Sycamore Open, Monday through Wednesday at Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation in Charlotte.
