Gilley Tastes Victory for Second Time in 2005

Steve Gilley PGA Golfer GREENSBORO, N.C. – Steve Gilley of Newman, GA captured his second Tarheel Tour win of 2005 on Thursday at storied Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro. Gilley, playing in only his third Tarheel Tour tournament of the year, held off a final round charge by Derek Watson to capture the prestigious title. Gilley’s round of 68 was jump started by an eagle at the narrow par-5 fifth. Bogeys on holes 12 and 16, coupled with a birdie at 15, brought Gilley to the short par-5 18th with a one shot lead over Watson. After a poor tee shot, Gilley laid up to 52 yards and managed to get up and down from there to claim victory.

“I love the traditional style golf courses,” said Gilley, who is now preparing for the first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School next week. “The narrow holes suit my eye and my game for that matter. I feel my accuracy gives me an advantage over some of the other players.”

One statistic that will amaze all players haunted by Sedgefield’s treacherous greens is that Gilley did not three putt once all week. For anyone who has played a Donald Ross golf course, they know that this falls somewhere in between miraculous and impossible.

Watson, a former Wofford star and longtime mini-tour player, carded the day’s low round with a 65. Watson was relatively out of the picture for much of the day before finishing eagle, par, birdie, birdie to lose by a shot.

Third place goes to Watson’s former Wofford teammate William McGirt of Greenville, SC. Fourth place was solidified by Greensboro’s own Ryan Gioffre, a former Demon Deacon standout and Nationwide Tour player.

The Tour would like to thank Head Professional Rocky Brooks and the entire Sedgefield Country Club staff for hosting such a wonderful tournament. The Tour would also like to thank Sedgefield Country Club member Doug Cline for his hospitality all week.

The Tarheel Tour returns to the Charlotte area next week for the Cowans Ford Classic at Cowans Ford Country Club on October 11-13.
