Seawell's Late Charge Earns $9,000 Victory in Rocky River Classic

CONCORD, N.C. -- Once again, David Seawell caught fire on the closing nine Thursday, and this time it led to the $9,000 first-place check in the Tarheel Tour's Rocky River Classic at Rocky River Golf Club.
Seawell, a former PGA Tour player from Columbia, S.C., made birdies on three of the last six holes to shoot a one-under 71 and surge past former U.S. Public Links champion Chris Wollman of Strongsville, Ohio. Seawell posted a three-day total of seven-under 209 thanks largely to strong play on the back nine. In the second round, Seawell made five birdies on the back to move to the top of the leaderboard.
"I played the back side better all week," said Seawell, an All-American at South Carolina. "I seemed to be able to read the line on the putts better. Chris went a shot up on me at No. 12, but then I birdied 13 and 14, which turned my momentum around."

For Seawell, it was his first Tarheel Tour victory and a key step in his comeback. He took four years off after losing his PGA Tour card in the late 1990s, before returning to competition last year and advancing to the second stage of PGA Q-School.
"I struggled when I was on Tour with putting, and now my putting is pretty consistent," he said. "I make the putts I am supposed to make now."
Wollman, who played collegiately at Ohio State, also shot 71 Thursday, and collected $5,000 for finishing second at 210.
Nine players earned $1,738.88 each for tying for third at 214. The group included Jay Haas Jr., of Greer, S.C.; David Siegel of Charlotte; and last week's winner, Frank Adams III of Laurinburg. Another six players tied for 12th, picking up $950 apiece.
The Tarheel Tour takes a week off before returning to action April 19-21 with the Verdict Ridge Invitational, a Stableford scoring event at Verdict Ridge Country Club in Denver, N.C.
