Mathis Regains Form
at River Run

David Mathis fired a final round 69 in the Tarheel Tour’s River Run Classic on
Thursday to win his second career Tarheel Tour event, and the first place check
of $16,000.
Mathis began the day one shot behind three players but was able to pull
away late carding the only final round score in the sixties on the wind blown
River Run layout. The Raleigh, NC native began the 2006 season with full status
on the Nationwide Tour but a disappointing season ended with an unsuccessful
attempt at PGA Tour qualifying school. Frustrated, Mathis entered the 2007
season with only conditional Nationwide Tour status but hopes that this result
is a sign of things to come.
“I think this win validates all of the hard work I put in over the
winter trying to improve my game,” said the NC State alumnus. “Hopefully
this is a sign of things to come.”
Mathis carded his five birdie, two bogey round and watched as his nearest
pursuer, Justin Walters, needing to birdie the par-5 18th to force
extra holes, pulled his drive and hit his second into the greenside pond
preserving the victory. Despite his finishing bogey, Walters made an impressive
2007 debut on the Tarheel Tour finishing 2nd at –7, two shots behind Mathis.
Walters won $10,000 for his efforts this week.
A pair of former UNC-Greensboro golfers, Andy Crain and Andy Bare shared
third place at 6 under par. For Crain it was a great debut after spending the
winter months painting houses in his hometown of Goldsboro, North Carolina. And
it was almost even better as Crain’s second shot on the 18th, a three wood
from 233 yards into a frisky wind, slid just past the hole and settled four feet
behind the away. Sadly, Crain’s putt for eagle didn’t drop and he had to
settle for a birdie and a tie with Bare.
The Tarheel Tour would like to thank Director of Golf David Ross and the
entire golf shop staff for their help in running this event and for allowing the
Golf Channel to hold Big Break tryouts throughout the week. The tour would also
like to thank golf course superintendent Mac Ryan and his staff for presenting
the tour with a beautiful golf course.
The tour takes a brief sabbatical before heading to it’s home away from
home, Cabarrus Country Club, for a walking only event May 2-4.
