Olde Sycamore Open by Tim Simpson - April 14, 2006

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Four time PGA Tour winner Tim Simpson shot a final round 67 to win the Tarheel Tour’s Olde Sycamore Open by one shot over Greer, SC native Brent Delahoussaye.
Delahoussaye, who played collegiate golf at Clemson, entered the final round with a one shot lead over Simpson. The former Tiger lead for much of the front nine before a bogey at number nine, coupled with a birdie from Simpson, dropped him to one shot behind the former PGA Tour star.
The two players would trade shots for much of the back nine before coming to the short par-5 18th. Both players were short of the green in two shots and had relatively simple pitches left. Simpson chipped up to five feet while Delahoussaye’s attempt came up 20 feet short. After a two putt from Delahoussaye, Simpson was able to roll the short putt in for birdie and the win.
This is Simpson’s first professional win since recovering from Lyme disease and undergoing brain surgery as a result of the illness. He was forced to undergo spinal fusion as a result of the horrific disease, which nearly cost him his life.
“I hope my win here can help inspire people suffering from cancer, leukemia, or any serious illness. You have to believe that you’re going to get through the tough times and that better roads lie ahead.”
Simpson will be fully exempt for the Champions Tour when he turns 50 on May 6th of this year. He has been playing the Tarheel Tour in 2006 in order to prepare for his debut.
“These guys do a hell of a job with the Tarheel Tour. They play great courses and run a first class operation.”
Simpson, through his first four events on the Tour, became a favorite of many players looking to learn from someone who has been to the pinnacle of golf.
“This is really a great bunch of kids out here. I kind of see myself as a mentor to them and I enjoy being able to help them out however I can. I guess it’s my way of giving back,” said Simpson, who will play two Nationwide Tour events before jumping to the Champions Tour.
Finishing third by himself was South African Garth Mulroy. Mulroy tied the low round of the day with a 67 and earned $5,000 for his good play. Solo fourth went to Rocky Mount native Adam Howell. Howell was the measure of consistency this week with steady rounds of 69-71-70.
The Tour would like to thank Head Golf Professional Doug Ballenger and General Manager Dwayne Simpson for hosting a great tournament. A special thanks also goes out to Mark Burnett and his staff for presenting a well manicured golf course for the week.
The Tarheel Tour will be back in action April 18-20 at the Bermuda Run Open in Bermuda Run, NC.
