Adams Overcomes Struggles to Win Tarheel Tour's Charlotte National Open

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. -  By Craig Distl - After missing the cut in all but one of his Tarheel Tour starts this season, Frank Adams was determined to make it to the final round of this week's Charlotte National Open. He accomplished that and more, shooting a three-day total of 11-under-par 205 to win the $5,000 first-place check at Charlotte National Golf Club.
Adams, an East Carolina product who recently moved back to his hometown of Laurinburg, fired a bogey-free 68 on Friday to win by three strokes. He was the only player in the field to shoot in the 60s all three days, and he made only two bogeys in 54 holes. Not bad for a golfer that had been struggling.
"I've worked my tail off the last two weeks to get myself back into contention," said Adams, now playing out of Scotch Meadows Country Club in Laurinburg. "I didn't leave myself many chances to make bogey all week and that was my goal coming in. You can make some bogeys out here in a heartbeat, especially the last four holes."
Adams played the last four holes Friday one under par to pull away from playing partner Karl Mitchell of Greensboro. Mitchell shot a two-under 70 and finished second at 208, earning $3,000. Josh Dickinson of Matthews jumped into a tie for third place at 209 with the help of a hole-in-one on the 216-yard par-3 sixth hole. Dickinson used a 4-iron for the ace en route to a 68 and collected $1,750, as did second-round leader Fernando Mechereffe. Mechereffe, a Brazilian coming off an all-ACC season at N.C. State, closed his professional debut with a 72 to finish at 209.
Lenoir's Jason Martin was fifth at 210 and pocketed $1,300, while Vance Heafner of Raleigh shot 212 and earned $1,200. The next event on the Tarheel Tour is the River Run Classic, July 19-21 at River Run Country Club in Davidson, N.C.
