Cannon Fires Impressive 66 to Regain Winning Form

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Matt Cannon of Huntersville earned his first win of the year by shooting an impressive 66 Thursday in the final round of the Tarheel Tour's South Carolina Classic at Carolina Country Club.
Cannon captured the $9,000 first-place prize with a 13-under total of 203, edging Charlotte's Fernando Mechereffe by a shot. It was a special victory for Cannon, who's struggled to regain his form after a car accident last October ended his 2004 season.
"It's nice to put three rounds together. I've been plaing well for one or two rounds, but I've been very inconsistent this year," said Cannon, who broke two ribs and injured his shoulder in the accident. "This is the really the first tournament where the velocity of my golf ball was back. I finally felt I could take a rip at it."
Cannon started the day four shots behind Mechereffe, but took control early with birdies on holes 3, 4, 6, 7 and 10. He closed with a birdie on No. 18 to secure his 16th Tarheel Tour win and push his tour-best all-time earnings to $116,771.63.
"Everything was pretty good this week," Cannon said. "There weren't many bad shots."

Mechereffe, playing in the group behind Cannon, made a late surge with an eagle on No. 18, but had to settle for a 71. His second-place finish at 204 earned him $5,000.
Former TCU standout Scott Volpitto of Jupiter, Fla., fired a 67 to move into a tie for third at 205 with former N.C. State All-American Chris Mundorf of Greensboro, who shot 69. They won $2,500 apiece.
North Augusta's Kyle Bradley, who played at the College of Charleston, shot 67 and tied for fifth with Pinehurst's David Sanchez, who also shot 67. Both took home $1,800.
Three golfers tied for seventh at 207, earning $1,216.66. They were: Blake Adams of Eatonton, Ga., Stewart Moore of Charlotte and David Seawell of Columbia, S.C.
The tour is off next week before returning to action Aug. 9-11 with the Statesville Classic at Stateville (N.C.) Country Club.
