Fiese Rides Hot Putter To Cabarrus Classic Title

Concord, NC- DJ Fiese fired a final round 69 amid a consistent 20 mile per hour wind to capture the Cabarrus Classic by two shots over Matt Mincer at Cabarrus Country Club Friday. The win was Fiese’s second on the Tarheel Tour and his first since winning the Olde Sycamore Open last July.

Fiese, a native of Roswell, GA began the day in a three-way tie for the lead at eight-under par with three time Canadian Amateur Champion Richard Scott and tour rookie Jerry Richardson. The affable Fiese began his day with a one-under par 35 on the front nine, which left him in a tie at the top with four other players heading into the final nine holes of the event. A par on the benign 10th followed by birdies at the 11th and 12th holes gave Fiese a two shot lead that he would not relinquish. A 25-footer for birdie at the 17th made Fiese’s bogey on the final hole a mere footnote in his two shot victory.  Fiese credited a hot putter for his win, “I just felt really good all week with the putter and made every putt I had to down the stretch to win this tournament,” remarked Fiese. “My birdies on 12 and 15 were both from 25-feet and in between I made a few good ones for par as well.”

The win earned Fiese $20,000 and vaulted him into fifth place on the 2008 Tarheel Tour money list with $27,900 in earnings. Fiese was pleased with the first place check but took more pride in the victory, “To beat a field of this caliber on such a demanding layout is extremely rewarding to me. It’s always great to cash a large check, but to beat all of these great players means even more.” Fiese was the only player in the field, which featured 21-former Tarheel Tour champions, to finish the week with scores in the 60’s all three days.

Matt Mincer, a recent graduate of UNC-Charlotte fired a final round 68 to finish alone in second place at nine-under par. The second place finish was worth $11,500, the largest payday of his short career as a professional. Mincer’s previous best finish was a T-15 at the Manor Classic a few weeks ago. The native of Lenoir City, TN made six birdies on his way to his final round 68 which was good enough to share the low round of the day with 2007 Southern Open Champion Shaun Norris, and another tour rookie, Jason Kokrak.

Six players finished in a tie for third place including Rivertowne Open champion David Robinson. The veteran from Sandersville, GA shot a final round 71 and extended his incredible made cut streak on the Tarheel Tour to 28 in a row which dates all the way back to the 2005 season. Also in the gaggle of players finishing at eight-under par was 2007 match play champion, Kevin Kisner. Kisner opened the tournament with a course record tying 63, but was only able to muster a 74-71 finish in his final 36-holes and had to settle for a tie for third. William McGirt also finished the week at eight-under par and is the only player to finish in the top-10 in every Tarheel Tour event in 2008

The Tarheel Tour would like to thank Head Golf Professional Ken Guilford and his staff for all of their hard work this week. The tour would also like to thank golf course Superintendent Tim Davis and his staff for once again providing a graeat golf course for the players despite heavy rains in the days leading up to the event. The tour heads to Huntersville, NC and the beautiful Northstone Club for the Northstone Open next week.
