Gerald Weathers Named Bright’s Creek Director of Golf

MILL SPRINGS, N.C.Nov 16, 2005  – Gerald Weathers knew he wanted to direct the golf operation at the new Bright’s Creek Golf Club, even before construction of the golf course had begun. Now, his wish has become reality.

Weathers has been named director of golf at the Tom Fazio-designed layout located 10 miles east of Hendersonville, near well known North Carolina landmarks Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. The announcement was made by Barton Tuck, operating manager of the 4,600-acre private residential community being developed in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Prior to accepting the Bright’s Creek post, Weathers was the head professional at the Cullasaja Golf Club in nearby Highlands for the past six years. He served as the first assistant professional at Highlands Country Club for five years before that.

It was at Cullasaja where he met Tuck and first learned of the Bright’s Creek property.

“Barton is a member at Cullasaja,” Weathers began, “and he told me about this piece of land more than two years ago. He probably wishes he hadn’t, because every time I’d see him at the club, I’d bug him about it. When I finally got a chance to see the land for myself, I asked him to keep me in mind because I wanted to be part of this, right from the beginning.”

Now, as Bright’s Creek prepares for a spring 2006 opening, Weathers is getting that chance. He will direct the golf operation at a course that measures 7,435 yards from the longest of five sets of tees. A special 19th hole – a “hog” hole where players can settle tied wagers – plays 191 yards over a scenic pond but does not figure into the overall yardage. The layout takes maximum advantage of a site that provides 360-degree views of the North Carolina mountains, winding its way between ridgelines, through former pasture land and along the course’s namesake creek.

“From the first time I saw this property, I knew this was going to be a special golf club. I’m familiar with what Barton has done at Forest Creek, the quality that has gone into every facet of that project,” Weathers said, referring to the 37-hole community Tuck is continuing to develop in Pinehurst. “And I knew he would do nothing less here at Bright’s Creek. So for a year and a half, every time I’d see him, I would ask him what was going on over here.”

And what does Weathers think of the finished product, now that construction of Bright’s Creek is completed and the course is growing in?

“It’s everything I thought it would be, and more,” he answered.

A native Carolinian, Weathers, age 50, was born in Greenville, S.C. He attended Anderson Junior College for two years before graduating from Furman in 1977 with a degree in business administration. He played golf throughout his collegiate career. Since graduation, he has put together an impressive professional résumé. In addition to working at Cullasaja and Highlands, he has served at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head and Bonita Bay in Florida.

Bright’s Creek Golf Club is the recreational centerpiece of a 4,600-acre residential community that, upon completion, will offer more than 1,100 homesites and at least two Fazio-designed golf courses. Homesites average two acres in size. The property is being developed by Bright’s Creek Holdings, LLC, of Greenville, S.C.
