BRAY NOTCHES SECOND WIN OF 2006

BERMUDA RUN, N.C. – Asheboro, NC native Dustin Bray fired a final round 66 to capture the Tarheel Tour’s Bermuda Run Open, his second win of the year.
Bray began the day two shots behind 36 hole leader John McAllister of Spartanburg, SC. The former Tar Heel “All American” began his round in style with birdies on the first two holes. He would add birdies at 9, 10, and 12 and eventually make his way to the demanding par-4 18th with a one shot lead over McAllister. A perfect 3-wood down the middle left Bray with 114 yards left to a tricky back left pin. His approach shot went 20 feet long, just off the back of the green and slightly above the hole.
“At that point, I just picked a good line and decided to trust it,” said Bray.
Trust it he did. Bray’s putt hit the center of the hole and sealed his victory. It was an unlikely birdie for a likely winner as he increased his lead on the 2006 Tarheel Tour money list.
“I failed to Monday qualify for the Nationwide Tour this week and it kind of made me mad, especially because I missed by one shot with a 68. I think that helped me this week because I knew I was playing well, I just had to keep it going,” said Bray, who wasn’t even able to take a practice round on either course this week due to the qualifier.
McAllister wound up tying for second with Jonathan Jenkins of Jonesboro, GA. Jenkins was making an impressive final round charge before a bogey at the par-3 16th took the wind out of his sails. He was unable to convert birdies at either of the final two holes in order to put some extra pressure on Bray.
Fourth place went to 2006 Patriots Point Open winner Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey. The Bishopville, SC resident, who gained fame for wearing two gloves on the Golf Channel’s “Big Break” series, carded a final round 69 and pocketed $3,400.
Derek Watson of Murrells Inlet, SC and Jason Martin of Lenior, NC finished tied for 5th at 208. Watson was trying to post a low score for the leaders to sweat over before an errant tee shot at 18 went out of bounds.
The Ellis Maples designed layout on the Main Course was revered by all players this week. It’s “old school” style of demanding precision over brut strength was a breath of fresh air for tournament golf this decade.
The Tour would like to thank Director of Golf Jeff Nichols, Head Golf Professional Adam Carstens, Course Superintendent Ted Pegram and their respective staffs for hosting such a successful tournament. A special thanks also goes out to the members of Bermuda Run Country Club for being such gracious hosts for the duration of the week.
The tour will take next week off before heading to China Grove, NC for the Warrior Classic at Warrior Golf Club on May 3-5.
