Drew Nelson Shows Bloodlines With an Impressive 64 in Tarheel Tour Event

MARSHVILLE, N.C. -  By Craig Distl - Drew Nelson of Woodstock, Ga., made birdie on the final three holes to fire an eight-under 64 Tuesday and grab the first-round lead in the Tarheel Tour's Eagle Chase Classic at Eagle Chase Golf Club.
Nelson, son of two-time PGA Championship winner Larry Nelson, was two under at the turn before blistering the back nine with a 30 that included birdies on Nos. 10, 11, 13, 16, 17 and 18.
Chris Hockaday of Mt. Airy sits only a shot back of Nelson thanks to a bogey-free round of 65 that included an eagle on the 11th hole. Former U.S. Amateur champion Chris Patton of Fountain Inn., S.C., is tied third at 67 along with David Siegel and Brett Boner, both of Charlotte.
Of the 57 players in the field, 26 broke par on a warm, sunny day perfect for scoring.
The tournament's second round begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The field will be cut to the top 20 and ties for Thursday's final round, which also begins at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public.
